I am going to add a shallow this weekend, our weather was foggy and cool...sun is our now..but...Since I am only adding and not inspecting the hive, do I have to wait for warmer weather conditions? It is probably around 62 and a bit breezy right now at 4:14pm pdt
Tanks Moochoo
If you have a honey flo coming on, put it on.

if i waited for sun and + 62 temps, i'd never open my hives!! :-) go for it.
LOL kathy!
On a sunny day with no wind anything above 50 is ok as long as you don't keep it open too long and take frames of brood out for no longer than 30/45 seconds. Don't sound very long, but think about when you're waiting on something. A minute can be a LLLLOOOONNNNGGGG time.

Very true...I amnot going to mess with the brood...I figure...less than 1 minute. 8-)
Ain't it wonderful?
Up here in the PNW where 70F is considered moderately warm we open our hives in the spring in less than 50F weather and spend much of spring in that mode. If we waited for warmer weather (as Kathy said) we wouldn't be looking at our bees until May or June.
In Florida, where 70F is considered barely above freezing, they think us northern beekeepers are out of our minds (Right Brandhen?) when we go into our hives in our shirt sleeves and veils.
It's a good take on why localized bees weatherwise have such a better survival rate that bees from areas with more extreme weather. Extreme being either better or worse. It's also why what works in Maimi might not work in Seattle.
we got up to 63 today!!!! i have been out in my shorts and teeshirt watching the bees come and go. summer is here at last!!
I added the shallow, chased by one little girl...but everyone else was happy...now 2 deep brood and one shallow super no excluder...can't wait to see what happens next
