but i would be very happy if someone would post some plans or at least measures (in metric if possible) for the famous 8 frame 2/3 LR hive.
i've been thinking a lot about different types of hives and in the end i came...to where i started so...
i thank you in advance.
>2/3 LR hive
? What is that?
here in Slovenia we call LR hive the Lang hive
a 1/1 super is meant as a deep super, a 1/2 super is a shallow one, while 2/3 or 3/4 supers are the medium supers, though I dunno which super depth is used in the US as mediums
hey, Mici
besides the super's depth (or height) I think you get the width of a 8-frame super by subtracting the with of 2 (regular) LR frames and thats it....if I am not wrong, MB in his supers uses 9 frames instead of 8 because he uses frames 32 mm wide instead of regular ones
BTW, Mici,
wouldn't it be easier for you to start with a GJ hive since you already have the colonies on AŽ frames so you just transfer the frames in the GJ supers-I know GJ supers are quite have, but you are still young ... :-D
plus you can buy GJ hives for a very reasonable price - 1 super is 10 EUR only!
currently I have 4 colonies in GJ hive and I am very satisfied with the workability
oh..forgot...
like TBH-fan told you michael, mediums are called 2/3 LR and shallows are 1/3 LR. i gues a medium really is 2/3 the size of a deep.
yeah i know i could subtract and all but...mistakes happen, to often to me, so i perfer asking.
i know i could use the GJ but if i did it would be just the same to me, i mean...2 GJ deeps are equal to 1 AŽ hive so...ummm i'm like...trying to get a fresh start on some other hive type.
Mine are 349.25 mm wide by 504.825 long by 168.275mm deep outside measurments.

well, 2 GJ supers are definitely not enough for a fully developed colony-you should need 3 or even 4 supers
the 168 mm depth of your supers, Michael, is practically the same as the depth of the so-called 2/3 LR supers in Europe
so, if i'm not wrong one 8-frame medium equals (in comb area) to about half a 10-frame deep, right? I guess you use at least 6 of your boxes for a fully developed colony?

Exactly.

Or more.
