Title: Split - When to add new queen
Post by: mgmoore7 on September 11, 2007, 08:51:57 AM
I am going to do a split into a nuc but I need to know when I should introduce the queen that I have.  Should I do the split and wait a day or some other timeframe or should I put the queen in immediately.  She is in a plastic cage with a candy cap.

make your nuc, if you haven't found the queen in the hive you are splitting, do the split, wait about 2-4 hours and go back the queenless split will be loader, the hive will be a steady buzz, this is the queenless split, wait till the next day and add the queen, like I said in other post, I like to install the queen and not pull the cap for a couple days then let them releae her, if you just have candy then install her and let them release her.

I like to have them queenless overnight.  If it's my distant outyard (60 miles away) I might wait two hours for them to figure out they are queenless and then put the queen in.

I made the nuc tonight.

1 empty frame of HSC, 1 honey, 1 polen/honey, 2 brood and some extra bees.  Put pin straw in front of the entrance.

I will put the queen in tomorrow morning.

Thanks.
