Can anybody recommend the best fabric to use for straining extracted Honey? There was a post a while back that recommended a certain fabric. I searched the forum and could not find the post. As I remember it was available at Wal-Mart and had an unusual name (it was not cheesecloth).
I think cheese cloth works...
Cheesecloth can give you lint in your honey. The correct material is called Nylon Strainer Cloth and has an 80 mesh per inch weave. Oh, and if you choose to wash it, do so only with cold water.
Oh ok...I heard of cheese cloth somewhere. You can probably tell I've never harvested honey yet huh?
PM Beth about that cloth from Wal Mart. It was her post and got wiped out like a bunch of information did when post got deleted with out a reply in 30 days. An error, which wasn't done to cause problems but to free some space by ridding the forum of junk post that were more chit chat than any thing.
Grumpy
Nylon cloth is corrct. Go to Home Depot and go to the paint aisle and get a paint strainer. They are about 97 cents each. They will stretch over a 5 gallon pail.
brand new pair of pantyhose works- :)
shelly
honey is a food product you should use a food grade filter and containers.
If you plan on marketing it you need to use a filter made for food. You can
Get a 5 gallon filter bag from several beekeeping supply companies for around $ 3.50 or so. If you use something that is not food grade you risk contaminating Your honey with both biological and chemical contaminants.
I can't remember what the stuff was called, but it's a material that someone would use under a dress. Real cheap, and works great - .50 cents a yard. I bought several yards, and use it every time I extract. Easy to rewash if you like, but I don't. It's just too cheap to bother with reusing.
And yes, I bought it at walmart. Not too hard to find in the fabric area. Looks like a cloth screen, and often comes in different colors. White is most common.
Sorry I don't have the name of it. If you must have the name, I'll go to walmart and find it.
