Honey
In a recent cough-and-cold study by Ian Paul, M.D., of Pennsylvania State University's College of Medicine, this was rated as the best cough remedy. "It's thick and syrupy, and it coats where the irritant receptors are," explains Paul. It also causes salivation, which prevents dry coughs, and it is rich in antioxidants. Give kids 1 to 5 years old 1/2 teaspoon, kids 6 to 11 one teaspoon, and kids 12 and older two teaspoons. Though honey can sometimes lead to botulism in infants, it's fine for older kids.

I already drool in my sleep too much.
Yep, honey, honey, honey. Every child knows around here to get those sore throats as often as they can, hee, hee. We have honey available on the kitchen counter top. One for owies on the outside of the body, that one has propolis globs in it, and one for plain and simply sore throats. Honey is becoming so much in the news these days, even so far as being used topically for that hideous flesh eating disease. Honey has been around since the beginning of time itself. It was used in the days of old when the soldiers would take it to war with them to fill their gaping wounds with this substance. Lots of research has been done on the therapeutic benefits of honey and isn't it a glory? Have a wonderful and greatest of days. Cindi
honey is ok, but it doesn't work for me, it actually irritates my throat even further and leaves an unpleasant taste after a few minutes.
the #1 anti-cough medicine is the plantain syrup!
I know what plantain is but how do you make syrup from it? Are there sugars in the sap that you boil down?

hmmm, i find it very easy just to buy it, since you don't use all that much of it.
though, i did try to make it, i had a receipe...something like this:
2cm layer of leaves (press them hard) 2cm layer sugar...and so on, then you close the jar and dig it into the soil for half a year (i think that constant temp is the trick the soil does), then you strain it and boil it (to kill the yeast). well, my batch turned out quite sourish, but i haven't had cough since then, so i can't say if it works or not.
Mici, that was wonderful. A good thing to think about for this upcoming summer. The plantain syrup would be just about ready by the time that the fall comes, with the sore throats that so many get. Good. Have a wonderful and great day. Cindi
