Title: Rising Costs for beeks
Post by: KONASDAD on January 28, 2008, 11:30:19 AM
As part of my assoc w/ local NJBA, I arranged for the purchase of some quens from Purvis bros last year. The cost was $14/ queen. This year, purvis is advertising queens at 21 each. So, I went back and looked at a receipt for local woodenware. A med. assembled and dipped w/ wood frames and foundation was 20. This year 24.75. I guess it was only a matter of time. Purvis has also received lots of press which probably resulted in huge demand as well. I only wich my income went up the same percentage!

I like Purvis philosophy for queens and will be giving them a good test. This will be first full year w/ them and keeping fingers crossed. If they never need meds, Theey are inexpensive. I also keep Mn Hygenics and Like them but a little brood happy for wintering sometimes . Needs lots of stores.

We can always offset the cost by charging more for our honey, bee pollen or wax.  :-D

The cost increase may partly be my fault.  I was talking with him this fall and when he mentioned what he was charging for his queens, I said Dan that is kind of low considering the rigorous testing you put your stock thru.

Dan can't keep up with the demand for his queens.

Don't you get a discount purchasing through your association?

We did get a discount last year, which was 14. Normally would have been 16 the date we ordered. I will be contacting him again for a group price. You save on shipping and insurance and other stuff as well. He has gotten lots of recent publicity and I expect this increase is to be expected. Also, stuff costs more all over. So far I really like the bees, but they haven't yet survuved their first winter, but so far three for three dong well!

Everyone probably needs to keep in mind that Dan's queens are bred for the weather conditions of the S East US.  Also keep in mind that I think the first price break is after purchasing 25 or more queens.

Set aside any recent publicity, Dan has not been able to fill 100% orders for a few years now.  He simply cannot keep up with the "Old demand".  Rightfully so to pay $21.00 per queen.  He must be doing something right.

He told me that if you start a package of bees on foundation with "His queen" that colony would be good to go for atleast 2 years with zero treatments.

last year when yaw got them queens from Dan yaw must have got a deal, he was at $18 a queen last year 1-19 queens then price break, I have got bee's from Dan the 2 years ago and they are very good bee's, Dan is just keeping up with others, B Weaver jumped his prices this year to $22 a queen for all stars and all Americans, he supplies to Drapers Super Bee and with their shared added the are $22.95 a queen and $125 for a 3# package, boy they getting expensive, with gas prices I figure they are just the first to increase, by next year all should follow, it cost more to run to them out yards now, honey should be next also.....
