Title: Question on building hives
Post by: Gregg on February 10, 2008, 09:22:55 AM
Ok I am a newbe, so this may sound dumb. I order some hives and they came in Friday going over the contents , I am more confused than ever on where to start putting them to gether :?
Any sugestions to un confuse me . If I knew how the parts were labled, it would be much less confussing on how to put them together.

Are you talking just hive bodies or are you including frames?

If it is just the hive bodies then you pick out two long ones and two short one. All of them should have a "handle" cut out of them right in the middle of one side. That would be the outside. Look at the shorter ones. They should have a "frame rest" cut out one one edge. That will be the inside top. Holding that so the "frame rest" is up and the "handle" is outside you now match one of the longer ones to one side of it with the "handle" outside. All the little square notches should slide right into each other. Just glue and nail those together. If both bottom edges are sitting on the ground you got it right. Noe put on the other side the same way and then the other short one on the back the same way. If all the handles are outside and the frame rest are on top inside and all sides sit on the floor you got it right.

Glue all joints with wood glue, use a square to keep the boxes square, and put a nail from the crossbar into the  top bar like photo 5934 to keep the top bar intact when prying frames out of the box.

I have found what helps the most is have a nice flat work area strong that you can hammer on. Big enough to set the whole super on to assemble dry no nails. Make sure the handles are on the out side and facing up.  Have Fun after you do this try plastic frames.  Good luck  Tony
