Title: I Got Stinged In The Head!
Post by: DayValleyDahlias on February 10, 2008, 07:56:08 PM
Yup, its is true!  I am writing this note one a Benadryl high...Gio and I inspected the hive today, top and bottom every frame...Most of the girls were pretty tolerant throughout the whole episode.  We closed everything back up, went about our work outside ( an amazingly gorgeous day )...and later when I walked by the beeyard, BAM, I got chased, she got in my hair, and BAM again, the sting occurred.  First time in the head, near the temple/parietal area AND IT HURT...well it stung...hahaha..I can't believe the memories these girls have...hhhmmmm...

Oh and Gio got stung in the face and arm when he went to the yard, but he didn't tell me!!  Brat.

I keep reading where someone gets stung and they take Benadryl. What is the purpose of doing this?

Hi Jerry,

It Benadryl is an antihistamine, and when a person gets stung, the body tends to release a lot of histamines which cause swelling and itching. Taking an antihistamine like Benadryl can help slow down the symtoms of a sting, and for some people by them time before they have to go to the emergency room!

I know the feeling. I was just looking at my hives today from 20 feet away and got popped in the head. They kept butting me so I had to leave. I told them that I would be back with my suite and smoker!

I opened one of my hives today as well. No stings. In fact the girls lookes fat and happy to just laze around while I looked for the ever ellusive queen. Never did find "her invisible majesty". I did see eggs and brood growing though, so I am optimistic for the spring. The bees really did look good. All fat with healthy wings. No evidence of SHB. I was covered with them last fall.

I smoked them a little differently today than I had in the past. I shot thick smoke in the entrance (1 puff), pulled the top dashed some smoke on the top then hit the entrance again with spaced puffs until I saw the smoke coming through the top. Took about two additional puffs. Man those girls were docile today.

The temp was 69 degrees and I had a bit of flight traffic and several were bringing in pollen. It looked like they were getting nectar from somewhere because they were filling in one side of a frame a couple of frames away from the cluster. They were in the top body on a double brood body set up and it looked like there was nothing left in the bottom deep. I didn't pull off the top one to look at the bottom as it would have been too much trouble for my short visit today.

Good night all,  Steve

It must be in the air!!
I got stung just yesterday afternoon!. She dug into the hair on the back of my head.(I dont have hair on the top) I knew it was coming, so i did what any expert beekeeper would do...I ran towards the closest person I could find! I always figure this might distract them from me and make them go get someone else. My wife, Janelle was the only person around but by the time I got to her the bee was already anchored! Didnt seem to bother me much this time. I think winter stings are milder than spring and summer stings.

john

Oh Annette, karma has me...now my eye is almost swollen shut!

Annette, the inspection went rather well...checked every frame in both deeps.  No supercedure cells now swarm cells.  Tons of caped brood, some larvae and eggs, tons of fat bees...good honey and pollen suplly too...also has a decent amount of area for queen to lay if she picks up...I think I had better check in a few weeks, especially if this weather keeps up...I am going to have to remove some honey frames at that time I am sure...

Sharon, Steves, good, bees are flyin' and movin', and healthy and strong -- we are going to be starting to hear little stories like these ones about the early initiation to the visits of our bees.

Sharon, get a picture of you and your Husband both, these are neat to look at.   If he remains reluctant, tell him it is in the realm of bee research, that will really get him going,    Have a wonderful and beautiful day, love our life.  Cindi

i have found that one benadryl is not enough for me.  if i take 50 mg when i get stung and take 25 every 6 over the next 24 or so, that seems to work better. also motrin.  i swell BIG!

glad things went well.  if you could run like that you probably didn't drink enough  :-)

So taking benadryl means you're not man enough to handle the stings?  :-D

MB has turned me on to plantain weed. When stung, chew up a few leaves and smear on sting and w/in five minutes no swelling, no itching nothing. I now use plantain wweed for any bug bite, poison ivy itchy skin etc. i am amzed at its powers. Heres a link to some pics of weed. 2nd most common weed in states.

jerrymac, i am not man enough  :-)

i didn't have luck with the plantain last year, but maybe i did it wrong.  i have plenty of it around in the summer so i will try it again.  last year my skin blistered, but i don't know if it was from the weed or from the extreme swelling.

Arright!!
Thats a good one for sure!!
Tell people that your husband did it...or you had a wreck(Might give you a day off)..Or you fell off a merry-go-round....Or, maybe, a lightning strike will work! It also looks like a baseball hit you in the face!

But, you know what?...Its BEAUTIFUL!!..The beekeepers TATTOO!
You can tell your husband he's a member of the club, like it or not!

Sharon, oh what a hoot and a hollar!!!  You poor thing, hee, hee, you ain't seen nothin' yet!!!  Thanks so much for showing us your poor pretty little face, it still is beautiful, hee, hee.

You had trouble getting the image to be posted properly, do you know what you did wrong?  I don't know, but Brendhan did an excellent job of fixing it for you.  You should pick his brains to get him to help you to load the images in the right manner, something must have gone wrong.  Give it a whirl, ask him.  Give him a PM.  I sure can't figure out how people get so computer literate!!!!!

Have a wonderful and beautiful day, love this life (and love your face too, take care of it, hee, hee).  Cindi

Back in high school I had a blind date that had puffy cheeks.

NO. She wasn't blind so don't ask.

[...and when I walk I can feel the liquid giggling...]

I feel like that a lot, especially around Thanksgiving.

Look on the bright side, eventually you gain immunity or die.
Either way it hurts less later.

Wait 'til the day after, they always look better.

PS. Welcome to the club, you've earned a buddy hug on this one!

Oh gee thanks for the kudos for getting a sting in the head and looking like a goof with an edematous right face and neck...aaaackkkk...it does smooth out the wrinkles though hahahaha

BTW, I am voting for the immunity over the death part...eh em
