Assuming that you are talking about splits, I would like to refer you to Michael Bush's website.

David, first off, welcome to our forums.  You have found THE place to ask the questions that you will need to to get going and feel comfortable with your bees.  It is a very friendly place, everyone helps each other out, we are one, one purpose in mind, to become great beekeepers, and that we all will.  It takes time and lots and lots of learning.  We have friends here that have been keeping bees almost all of their lives, ones that have kept bees for a short time, ones getting their bees, and some that are just learning and lurking, becoming more informed by the hour.

You will have all the answers your heart could desire.  Welcome, have a wonderful and beautiful day, love our life we live on this greatest of planets, Earth.  Cindi
