If you put out a swarm trap like the one from dadant, and are fortunate enough to catch a swarm. how long do you have to do something with that trapped swarm. i have a few areas i could put some traps but i couldnt check them on a regular basis more like every 2 to 3 weeks. would the bees stay in them or leave or what?

I have captured two swarms in the same trap 2 weeks apart.If you check out
your trap and the bees have set up shop just cut them out I guess.Then continue enjoying your beekeeping

If they move in they are calling it home and wont be leaving.

But the sooner you get them out the less work it will be. :)

Keith, if you wait too long they will build inside the trap, sometimes outside the trap, and you will have to do a transfer, more like a cutout and transfer.

Agreed the sooner you do it the better. If they are just recently in the trap they are just starting to build comb. Move them before they do and you don't have to do a cut out.

If you leave them alone they will place a mailbox outside and call it home.
