Title: Darkened wax
Post by: Misko on April 11, 2008, 02:51:33 PM
hi!

I checked my hives today and i found out that my bees build darkened wax. What I mean that new wax combs are more white-yellow colored. Is there something wrong? Am I making big thing out of this.
Here's the picture <img src="http://shrani.si/t/2M/P7/4TUYEiAO/picture-001.jpg" style="border: 0px;" alt="Shrani.si"/> (http://shrani.si/?2M/P7/4TUYEiAO/picture-001.jpg)
Sorry for the bad english.

bye!

The picture may be deceiving me a bit but it looks like in your case, the dark areas have honey stored in it.  Comb will get dark over time anyway, a lot of it is due to foot traffic (noticeable on the caps) and also residue from emerged brood.

If you look at my comb and this comb http://www.cebelarstvo-bedek.org/satnica.jpg you can se the diference. This frame is in the hive 5 days i don't think that's foot traffic.

It depends on what they are collecting too.  The whitest wax I have seen came on vetch.  Wildflowers tend to produce darker wax.  I think some depends on the amount of pollen they track as well.

It is all perfectly normal.  All wax will get darker with age and brood comb will get black eventually.

It's the most common hive in slovenia the AŽ hive. Beekeepers in slovenia like to use it because they can put a lot of hives in a smal place it's also very easy to move around with a truck http://bajc.apidar.si/content/view/12/26/ or you have one or more container and move them around with a truck. Another reason we use this hive is that the population of beekeepers in slovenia is very old and they cant lift you tipe of hives.

If there's an interest i can make a new topic and describe our AŽ hive?

The pictures are great.  I like the colorful hives and the truck.  I am interested in your practices in keeping bees also.

When ou get a break from school give us some more details.

Check out the NOVA special called "Tales from the Hive".  They show a beekeeper using this type of hive inside a "beehouse".  There's a door on the back and you pull the frames out like a book from a book shelf.  They showed the keeper sweep the bees off a frame onto a ramp, and the bees just marched right back into the hive.  Not one flew off!  Inside the bee house there's usually no lights except a solitary window with no screens or glass.  This way when the bee takes flight, they head straight for the only light source to get out.  You don't even need a bee suit or vale!  This construction also keeps everything dry, safe from predators, warmer in the winter, and  you can fit a lot more hives in a smaller location by stacking them up.
