Title: Did my first splits today......
Post by: DennisB on April 19, 2008, 11:04:31 PM
Well, today was the day for the blind to lead the blind. A friend came up to help and I did my first splits today. All seemed to go well, I guess we'll see in a week. We used a couple of 5 frame nuc boxes that I built and placed 2 frames of broad, capped and uncapped and a good batch of bees from the two mother hives. Along with these frames we placed  a couple of partial frames of capped honey and a frame of drawn out comb. The queen cages were place in the center. There is a quart baggie of sugar water on top of the frames and a spacer box (about 2 inches tall to keep the top from squishing the baggie) and then the top. Did I miss anything?
All comments are welcome. Thanks

Dennis

It sounds like all is good. I like to make sure the brood is in the center part of the hive and have a full frame of pollen and honey. They will burn through the pollen very fast raising the brood and need a head start till the foragers are bringing in enough.

Dennis, go, go, go!!!  Excellent, you have had an adventure, good for you. It sounds to me like you are doing just fine.  Good that you have done this.  I am going to be making 4 (or maybe more) nucs pretty soon too.  I have 10 queens coming around the 25 of April.  They are from California, from Strachan Apiaries, New World Carniolans, this will be my actual making of nucs too.  I have dabbled very lightly in this last year and need a refresher in my mind's eye.  Hopefully things will go good for me too, best of this great and wonderful day, Cindi
