plastic bags that is ??? black garbage bag?? thanks
I would say yes.
...JP
I would say yes if they were trying to get out. But I don't think so if they were trying to get in. Sometimes we put our full supers in plastic bags for a couple days until we can extract. We've never had bees trying to get in to get the honey back out.
Jim
thanks again
hey. people come first. sucks that you had to do that, but at least you had the guts to get it done.
can you go to your profile when you have time and list your location? later, it might come in handy if you have area specific questions or comments.

Glad you cleared that up, was starting to hallucinate! ;)

Hey kathyp, That sounded like it might have been interesting. What was the gist?
Yea.. I was confused too. I thought she was respnding to another post by mistake
i suspect it was pulled because someone thought it might start a row. i'll bow to the wisdom of the mods and leave it be.
Kathy, yep I went :? :? :? too, and then read the following posts. It is like magic what goes on here behind the scenes, hee, hee, one minute you see it, the next minute you don't, hee, hee. The powers that be, that is a wonderful thing, it is positive, keeps things right here, and I love it!!!! But yes, my curiosity gets to me sometimes too, especially when I wonder what went amiss, hee, hee. Have that most beautiful and wonderful day, Cindi
Sory Yall, i removed part of that post thinking that it might start a "you shouldnt have" type of post :)
didnt mean to make anybody look the fool :(
what i deleated was how i had to put down a hive of bees because i thought they might be "ahb" i just bought them and the fool was me i guess :(
anyway sorry again.....
not to worry. i have made many opportunities for my self, to look foolish. a confusing post is tame stuff. :-D
did you buy a package, or a hive from someone else? can you tell us a bit more about what happened.....if you want to.

Ok lets see if i can tell this on one page...:)
i have been getting ready to get bees fer about 1 1/2 yrs now and i was about 30 miles from home and was talking to a guy about getting bees, well the guy piped up and said he knew where there was a hive for sale and if the guy didnt sell them bu the night he was going to kill them because he was leaving and suposadly didnt have anybody to take care of them, anyway long story shorter i went with no gear down the street to see the condemed hive :( made a quick check of the hive seen 4-5 frames of bees with the top lifted up, got stung and put the lid down, gave him 75.00 and came back after dark to get them loaded them and brought them home, set them on the stand and un screened them. next day walked out to take a look at them got about 25-30 feet away and was attacked :( ran(best i can) back to garage with about 10 of them still chasing me i had to turn the hose on and drown myself to get rid of them...so i left them alone for a couple days and then put on my "old vail and suit" and walked out there, smoke in one hand sugar water sprayer in the other. couldnt smoke or spray fast enough to keep them down. they just swarmed outa the hive and covered me, of corse my old equipment had a few holes and such and it took them about 2.2 seconds to find the holes and get inside... now i have 10 angry bees on the inside of my vail looking at me and 2000 outside looking at me :( couldnt take off the vail to get the 10 out and the 2000 wouldnt go away back to the garden hose again :( only got stung 4-5 times that time :) so after a day or two i went and ductaped the holes and tears and went back out again... didnt get stung but still had to use hose to get them to go back to hive so i could get outa my suit.. anyway they were so bad that we could be sitting on the front porch and a (as in 1) bee would fly by and turn around and try to sting sombody :( so that was the last straw, i couldnt wait months for them to calm down after requeening because of people and neighbors, i got my new jacket with zipper veil and like super man i went and attcked them and split them into 3 nukes and let them sit till dark and baged the nukes in bags and stuck them one by one into the freezer :( an older beek from down the road came and looked and he thought they might be AHB ....end of story...... i now have a "new" nuke i bought and they are fine i go and pet them :) LOL
as i said the first time...... :-)
Shan. Yep, I get it now, like KathyP said, people come first. This must have been an AHB colony, not a doubt. That would be why they were so protective. And yes, you didn't have time to wait for requeening in this instance. Personally, I think you did the right thing, that many angry bees is not a good thing and people do come first, no ifs ands, or buts. It is too bad that you gave the guy $75, I think you got ripped off and that is an even worse bummer. Good luck with your "new" package, it will be a much nicer bunch of bees. Have that most beautiful and wonderful day, Cindi
Mean bees suck.
I'd have done the same thing, except maybe with soapy water or burning sulfur.
Paying for that seems like a raw deal. Did you at least get some decent equipment out of the deal? You mentioned three nucs, so that sounds like 3 boxes, mediums? New equipment can easily top $100 for a basic hive...

nope, got about 8 old drawn out deeps, and a bunch of old empty shallow supers, the boxes were all rotted out in the corners, they are good enough to store frames in...i new the woodenware wasnt much good i was buying the bees :( so i got squat :( anyway live and learn,,,, i have a new nuke going here now that i just bought, and you can almost work it without any gear :) like McDonalds "im lovin it" LOL yall have a good 1
To be honest with you, that was a worthwhile post. Thanks for explaining.
As a newb having no frame of reference I might have thought behavior like that was the norm and given up. Since you replaced the bees and are having much better results it shows that there really are options. Highley aggressive bees is one of the concerns I have about getting bees.
Thanks for the post and explanation.

if the boxes only have bits of rot, you can repair with a little plaster or fixall. frames are cheap and worth replacing. the odd hole here and there will not bother the bees. they'll just use it as an entrance. you can duct tape the hole in the winter :-)
and, you can use some gorilla glue to tighten up loose boxes.
I'm sorry you had this experience, but seems to me you handled it very well, and had an opportunity to learn in the process. I'm not sure what I would have done. Glad to know that you didn't let this experience deter you from going forward. I'm sure your experiences going forward will be much for pleasurable.
Best,
Derrick
