Title: Ducks
Post by: BeeHopper on May 12, 2008, 03:53:33 PM
I'm starting to think 'bout keeping Ducks or something, with all the rain on the east coast we're getting, the bees are stuck inside.  :-x  Ducks loves this windy and rainy stuff.

I mostly agree with Kathy.  Ducks are messy but I DON'T like the way they taste!  :-P They do however make excellent slug & buggers.  I would get runners cause they are a bit smaller & more flighty so they won't crap on your porch or deck.  I had a blue swede named Hamilton that was in love with my aussie, he would follow her everywhere, even into the house trying to do his thing..poor dog, she couldn't sit still or lay outside till we got rid of him.  I don't have ducks now cause I have the koi pond. Good luck!

I grew up hunting ducks in eastern Arkansas, and learned to love the way they taste.  I suppose it is all what you get used to.  Some of the best times I ever had was taking folks out hunting in rice fields and flooded timber.  Not many self respecting ducks around here in the Ozark Mountains, but there are lots of turkeys, and they are fun too.

Used to raise Kaki Campbell (that may be wrong) ducks.  Fantastic layers and good eating ducks.  Had to quit.  Between the Gators and Bobcats all I would have come fall was the feed bill. :'(

We have ducks on our place, they are Roen's(tame Mallards).  They do mess on everything but they keep the grass trimmed around the steps and eat lots of bugs.  They are also fun to have at times.

Domestic duck is superb. Cook it in a roasting bag with lots of butter, sweet onions and seasoning. Makes ya wanna slap ya momma, twice! :-D

Ducks are the messiest critters on any farm.  If you must have ducks I would go with Muscovies as they are larger, nearly as large as geese body wise, have less fat, red meat, and will do everything else ducks do, ie weeding, slug and insect control, and otherwise be an all around general nuisance.  When it comes to being a nuisance the only topper to a drake is a Billy Goat.

Amen to that Brian.. :-D though the ducks themselves smell better!  A billy's "aroma" permeates the whole farm & will stay on buildings & trees forever! Wethers smell better but are still trouble on 4 legs!  Chev'y is more trouble at 1 than all the does I ever had over the years put together!  Jody

The walking varieties are great for starting to teach a dog to herd. They tend to stay together and don't overload a new dog just learning the ropes. My boy (see picture on the left) started with ducks.
