Title: candle making
Post by: hampshirebabe on May 15, 2008, 02:40:02 PM
Hi, I'm not a beekeeper, but my mum and dad are and I'm looking for a present for my mum. I thought she might like making candles so I thought I'd check with you if she'd need any special expensive equipment that they might not have. Is there a book I could get or maybe a kit? I saw one that contains sheets of wax, but I thought she'd use the wax from their hives? or maybe just some candle moulds?
Any advice appreciated
Mary

Hey,

I just use a pyrex measuring cup inside a pot of water to melt wax.

If you are using beeswax which IMHO is the ONLY wax for candles, then you need square braid cotton wicks. Prob. #2 to up to 3inch diameter and #3 for bigger.

Molds you can get as exotic as making your own from 2 part silicon mold making stuff (very easy) or as simple as the tube from a toilet paper roll

Fear no evil    lol

cheers
