Title: Tomorrow's the big day!
Post by: Amanda on May 20, 2008, 02:07:04 PM
We cleared out an area in our backyard and set up the hives on Saturday.  Tomorrow we go pick up the bees!  I'm so excited (and maybe just a little nervous).

Oh Amanda, you will be so pumped when you have your own.  The excitement really builds on the way home, then when you hive em, then when you see em foraging, building comb, larva, capped brood...then about 5-6 wks new bees on orientation flts. I love seeing "my grand-bees"  They are just so interesting.  Strangely you will feel very protective over your little families!  I'm after yellow jackets w/a vengence now.  Saw one flying near my hives & smacked it outta the air w/goat brush & stompled it.   Keep us posted, we love hearing about new adventures..well, I do anyways! :-D  Jody

I'm excited for you :)

My two hives have been going well for a month, and now I'm seeing larvae and capped brood and lots of activity.  It's fun stuff!!  Good luck!

Take plenty of pics.  You'll be glad later on that you did.  Congrats on your bees.  It is a wonderful experience.

Best wishes,
Derrick

Well, my dad and I drove about four and a half hours down to Moultrie, Ga yesterday to get our bees.  We hived the first package tonight.  It wasn't quite like we were expecting.  The directions that came with the bees said to spray them with warm water so that they couldn't fly, so maybe we didn't spray them enough because there were bees everywhere   We decided to wait until tomorrow to hive the second package.  Besides the air being full of bees, it went really well.  My dad didn't wear a veil or gloves, so I'm glad he didn't get stung.  Actually my mom is the only one that got stung and she was standing a good distance away taking pictures.  It makes me wonder if the bees can sense fear because she was definitely nervous.  I'm so excited, and I really want to peek in.  How am I ever going to wait a full week!

Congrats, you are now a bee-keeper!! :-D  I know how you feel about waiting...a week seems to take forever!  Try 1/1 sugar water instead of plain.  Did you let the queen out or do the marshmallow/candy deal?  Did I ever say that my Daughters name is Amanda?  Have fun tomorrow with the other one!!  Jody

Kinda fun and nervous at the same time.............sounds like me!  You might have bees everywhere but things will calm down and all of them will go into their new home soon.  Congrats!

Thanks, everyone.

Jody, I actually did use 1/1 sugar water.  I had my dad poke the hole through the candy in the queen cage because I was afraid of shishkabobing her.  That's neat that your daugther's name is Amanda, too.

Two Bees, you're right!  We went out about half an hour later, and there was not a single bee in the air.

We're supposed to get storms this afternoon, so I might not get to hive the second package today  :(
