Title: NOVA hives, what design
Post by: Gerald Boggs on May 22, 2008, 02:36:45 PM
Good Day.

New bee keeper here, on my third year.

Anyway, my question is about the hives shown on the NOVA program "Tales from the Hive"  I've never seen any hives like them and all internet searches have been unfruitful.

Thank you for any information you might provide.

I have never seen that program. Can you describe the hives?

I also found this website on the beesource forum in regards to the same question:

My local library had it, so I got to see it.  It is a very good video.  The camera work is amazing.

Thanks Jackie, that's the one.  Now if only that lead proves fruitful. :-)

JerryMac, I wouldn't dare try to describe them, visit the link Jackie posted and there's a photo of some.

Those in the second link are the most popular beehives, beehouses in Slovenia, home of Carni !

Topbarslo,  Thank you every so much.  Once again the beauty of the internet is demonstrated.

As for the hives of Slovenia, this is where form and function meet.  While many hive designs are functional, these are the first I've seen that are also works of art and better one's life for having seen them :-)

I'm working on restoring a old house and have a list of jobs that need to be done, but I think having a Slovenia bee hut is going to get moved high on the list.   It's just so wonderful of an idea.

Thank you for asking this question - I have been wondering about them since I saw that NOVA, too. They are so darned cute! I want one, too. If you build it, post your plans!

But I have so many questions about management in those little cottages...

Anyone going to organize our trip to Slovenia so we can get the scoop?!

We have Mici, a slovenian member in our forum who might be able to shed some light

Mici put up a envolved thread a year or so ago about AZ hives, very enlightening.  Do a forum search for it.

Been surfing for a few days.  Here's an excellent photo of a three level AZ hive.  Awaiting administrators approval :-)
