Hi Folks,
I am in the process of putting together some new hives that will have both top entrances and screened slatted racks intead of bottoms boards. Seemed like the easy and smart thing to do along with switching to all mediums.
My question is how to feed? I have a hive top feeder on my current hive and I see posible modification potential. I also could do community open feeder but it seems like a messy thing. I like the Jay Smith Bottom Board Feeder on the Bush farms web site but not sure how to use with the screened bottom board.
I know that a few of you already use top entrances and screened bottom boards. What are your thoughts?
Thanks for the help,
Alfred
I just use a bucket on top with a hole in the cover. It works great no matter what the entrance situation.
One easy way is to cut a hole in the top the same size as a jar mouth with the lid on. Then just use the jar & lid that come with a Boardman feeder. When not in use cover the hole with a piece of board or an electric junction box cover. Putting a screw on 1 corner lets you swing the cover out of the way and insert the jar to feed. The bees will glue it down when not in use.
I just put the feeder on top of two shingle shims, same as I do the lid.
