Title: Mediums for brood
Post by: BlueEggFarmer on June 03, 2008, 03:19:36 PM
This year I have decided to save my back and make everything interchangeable by switching the big brood boxes to mediums. Since my hives have 2 brood boxes each I am just making a clean split, giving them one brood box each and then adding mediums on top. Next spring when they have moved up into the mediums I will take away the big brood box.
So
My question is, will they use the yellow plastic foundation that came in the frames with the mediums  for brood or will they use it strictly for honey storage? Do I need to get a different foundation for the mediums for brood?
Thank you in advance  :-D

If they draw it out, they will use it for whatever they need.

Ross is right, they will use it for brood or honey depending on their needs.  My hives moved up from the deep to the mediums over winter and put brood on frames with the same yellow foundation.  I didn't take the hint and convert to all mediums which would have really helped me out this spring.  I will be doing the same thing you are this winter.  Good luck!
