Title: Had to try to save them
Post by: rast on June 05, 2008, 09:39:21 PM
Coming back from lunch today I saw a bunch of bees flying around on the side of the street in a city park. Stopped and sure enuff honeybees. A city crew had cut off a tree limb that was hollow and had bees in it. Honey/Nectar on the street. A good size swarm on a limb in the tree. After a couple of phone calls the police chief says, yeah go ahead and get them if I want. But Parks and Recreation thinks they hauled most of them to the dump in the limb. They want to know if when they find others, will I come get them instead of them just hauling them off. They have no one to call.  I educated him on AHB and what I would not do and he said great, that I would have the option. I went and got what was left on the limb and put them in a 4 frame nuc tonight with some comb with honey in it. I hope but doubt the queen was in the swarm. Probably went to the dump. :(

stick a frame of eggs and young brood in.  they might make a queen and survive.

I really don't want to weaken the one strong hive I have by robbing from it right now. Very little nectar flow right now. I did take the one comb from them that I put in there. It was the only completly filled out in the top box. I thought about buying a queen Sat. morning depending on what I see tomorrow night.
