Title: Added my first Honey Super
Post by: bizzybeehoney on June 12, 2008, 11:38:56 AM
Well, today I added my first honey super to my colony.  I am excited too see them (hopefully) add some honey in there.

I found an article at beesource.com/pov/hayes/abjaug85.htm.  Maybe it has been posted before, but somebody from Dadant did a study with the Queen Excluder.  After reading that article I am going to a top opening.  Right now I am just propping up the outer cover to give them an escape/entrance.

Congrats!  I added my first medium super two weeks ago.  I'm currently not using an excluder until the bees have had an opportunity to build some comb and store some nectar in this third box.  Then, I will consider placing an excluder under the medium super.  I read somewhere that if you "bait" the honey super like this, the bees will come through the excluder better.  Time will tell!

I checked about 1 1/2 hours after I added the queen excluder and 1st honey super.  There weren't any bees at all in the super.  Then I sprayed the foundation of the frames with sugar water and Honey Bee Healthy.  Man did the bees start coming through the excluder fast.  In about 10 minutes there were a few hundred in that super now slurping up the sugar water.

Giving them a reason to go there always helps :-D

I think the Honey Bee Healthy says not to feed when supers are on.  Read the link earlier today about honey be healthy!   Somebody said it tastes bad.

I am not feeding the bees with the honey super on.  I just sprayed some sugar water with Honey Bee Healthy onto 3 frames.  It brought them right up into the honey super.
