Title: Interesting trade
Post by: asciibaron on June 20, 2008, 05:01:41 PM
My wife is a big proponent of Freecycle - it keeps things that are still viable but not really worth money out of the landfills.  I let her know to be on the look out for a double boiler so I can melt wax for molding and securing starter strips.  She posted to the local Freecycle site looking for a double boiler and that it was to be used to melt bees wax.

The first reply was an offer to trade a double boiler for a tour of the hive.  The person took the short course from the local bee club but doesn't yet have bees.  Synchronicity at it's best!

I have to wonder if they are freecycling the boiler or if they are buying a new one for you, just to get the tour and make a friend/mentor in beekeeping...

Either way, sounds like a deal! I picked up a very small double boiler some time ago, but it takes me a long time to render any wax in it. I've switched to using a big kettle on a propane burner outside, then straining the liquid through a paint strainer bag into a 5 gallon pail, then letting everything cool overnight. The bottom of the wax needs to be scrubbed free of the small debris, but it beats trying to filter it twice after working with a double boiler.

my wax will first go thru a paper towel filter in a foam cooler.
