Title: Labeling your honey ~
Post by: Flygirl on June 25, 2008, 08:26:49 PM
Hello ~

How do you label your honey?  Do you use a commerically made stick-on label or one that you've designed?  I've seen both used but I'm just going to give my honey away to family & friends so I'd like a more personal one.

Is is required to have the "contents" listed somewhere?  (I've seen the calorie etc. labels in the catalogs)  I'd like to use a picture of my son, my little bee helper, on the label & maybe include some interesting facts or history of beekeeping?

I'm curious about what others do & would appreciate ideas to make it unique.?  FG

I know there is some way you can do sheets of labels on your printer.  Just what program you would use, maybe publisher?? I don't know.  With a cute pic of your son on it, I would even buy some..& I have my own bees! :-D Jody

I have found that the most useful and most user-friendly are the Avery labels. I use the 2160 which prints out 8, 1 x 2 and 5/8, labels/sheet. The only other suggestion would be to make sure that you put the "Do not feed to children under 12 months" label. Just to make sure that everyone is aware.

Thanks Jody & Kurt!  Yep, he's a good boy, loves the bees & knows a lot of the process for only being 4 ~ but hey I'm his Mommy :)

Thanks for menitioning the caution for children under 12 months!  I forgot about that & I don't think most people know about it?  I'll have to look into a way to set up a card, either avery or some other style.  I'd like to do a little fold over card with the photo & honey on the front & then other bee facts inside & maybe the caution on the back?

If I set it up I'll try & post it...I'm am artist by trade so I ought to be able to come up with something!  FG :)

I am using customized labels from Betterbee, but I intend to sell the bulk of my crop. When I have made some money at this, I'll create a custom label. But until then, customized, standard labels are my choice.

If you're not selling it, there aren't any requirements. If you sell, then requirements may vary by State.

If you're selling your honey, most of that stuff is only required if you produce a certain amount. I forget what it is but it's mostly for people who have fields of bee hives.

Flygirl,

Here is my labels i did on 'draw' and then when got one label done then keep duplicating till sheet is full. Then I got some laser gloss paper that is lightweight like regular paper and printed off w/inkjet and to make so it won't run if gets wet then I spray w/clear spraybomb and then cut out and put on w/a glue stick.

Works like a charm

COOL!  Thanks Peter.  These are original & beautiful ~  that's what I want to do.  Do you have anything on the back?  I want to put some "bee facts" on the back for educational purposes, too.  Not really sure what "facts" but I guess the things people usually ask like: what is honey, how do bees make it, how many bees in a hive....oh, oh, already sounds like a book & not a label :)

Thanks for responding & taking time to share the great label!  FG

You could put a hanging little informational tag from the jar with honey facts if you like.

you could try using "the print shop". I designed my labels on it. It gives the options of using various types of label sheets, once you select the type that you have it prints the correct amount per sheet.  for example i first started using avery sheets that were 10 labels per sheet then i switched to maco which was 14 labels per sheet. i just had to resize the label to fit the smaller dimensions. when you have printed you just peel and stick
