Title: destroyed hive
Post by: greenismycolor on August 02, 2008, 09:17:53 PM
I lost the hive that was ridden with shb, and robbing by hornets and bumble bees didn't help. There maybe 50 bees left, with no sight of the queen. From this hive there is a lot of stored bead bread. I left it in the storage celss and cleaned the extra wax away from it. Any suggestion what I can do with it??

Do you have another hive.

Yes Michael I have one other hive. I took a couple of frames of brood from my eldest hive to boost this weak one, and these were the 2 frames loaded with shb larva, but I saw no sign of shb when I gave it to them.  :'(

Oh, green is my color, I am so sorry that you lost that hive. It is just not fare when stuff comes at you like that. What kind of set up do you have. number of hives etc. I am sure you can reuse and redispurse. It will be ok one way or another.

Thanks for your feeling Franz. :)

I have one hive now, it came to me as my first hive and experience with bees. It was a swarm from spring 2007. They seemed to winter last year just fine. They are a full 10 frame deep brood, and have given me aprox 42# of honey this year. I've one super on now, their working on 5 frames. We have had a short drought, so I really haven't gone into them since I removed the 2 brood frames.  I am sure they have shb, and hoping they are strong enough to survive. I have a west beetle trap ordered for this one and an extra for the next one. I am sad and disappointed but not beaten.  I am really new with so much to learn, so your support is instrumental and I have taken from you and others who post here so much valued information.

There is a fairly local gentleman who is retiring and going to sell his hives.  I want to go take a look, do you have any information as what I should look for when I go? I have absolutely no idea.

Hope all your girls and boy's are well.

Don't know if AL. has an inspection program or not but if they do have an inspector go with you to check out those hives.
If not look for plenty of bees this time of year and lots of brood, honey stores should be plenty also unless he can show that he has extracted from them recently. Check also for any signs of varroa right now as they are about to be plentiful in the hives around now.
If you aren't in an assoc. right now join one and get someone with a few years experience to go with you to look at those hives.Better to be safe then sorry when spending money on used hives and equipment.
