Title: overwintering a Nuc
Post by: Keith13 on August 05, 2008, 09:50:03 AM
Can a Nuc overwinter here in South Louisiana? I could feed with out to much trouble I was just wondering could they survive the temperature swings?
Well since I'm asking questions how much would I have to feed would the feeding be constant or could they build stores?

Keith, the wonderful thing with nucs is that they are much easier to manage because they are condensed. They over winter quite well for a number of reasons, too much room can be a deathwish to smaller colonies but with a nuc they can manage because of less space to control.

You don't have to feed them as much either and I wouldn't, just set them up with a honey frame or two and keep an eye on them but there always seems to be enough nectar available in the fall to feed a nuc.

I've over wintered them here just fine.

I have 2 nuc's that I went through yesterday that need more room.  I was going to put them in 10 frame deeps tonight but instead added another 5 frame on top.  I am going to try to over winter them in these.  I will push them tight together and wrap the in tar paper.  The way i'm thinking is they might do better in a tall skinny hive and should have access and make use of all there food.

I overwinter them here.  There should be a snap.
