Matthiola Bicornis, also known as the Night-Scented Stock. I plant two planters on my bedroom patio every year. The scent from these flowers at night I have spoken of before. If you have ever had the joy of smelling these flowers that open at dusk, stay open all night long, close during the day, with no scent during the daylight (how do the bees find these closed flowers anyways???, that is beyond me, hee, hee), you know the treat for the nasal passages that I speak about. We leave our bedroom patio doors open all summer long, the aroma that comes through our bedroom all summer from these night scented flowers, well....I can say no more.
The bees gather white pollen from these plants, and during the day, even though these flower blossoms are closed, the bees find their little ways in to gather the pollen, nectar I don't think they gather from the plants, the nectaries are only accessible during the night, I think.
The flowers will remain open even during the early morning hours, it is the sunlight that rests upon them that closes them up. The scent of the flowers is most strong up until dawn, then it diminishes, ever so slowly. The very large night moths love these totally open flowers, I can see their shadows, and feel the gusts of wind from their wings. These moths are so large, they would probably at least be the size of a three quarters of a golf ball. I have extremely sensitive feelings for even the slightest gusts of wind, I can even feel breezes on my arms, that move the hairs on my arms. Odd enough, I wonder if this is common amongst the human race, or am I one of a kind ;) :) :) :). I have been told many a time, that I am a strange woman.
Enjoy the picture of these beautiful little flowers, that grace my gardens, in containers and growing wild. Beautiful day, most wonderful day, love our grooving life we all live and share. Cindi

Cindy, Cindy . . . . you had quite a nice plan in mind when you planted that night-scented stock, didn't you?

I use a Jon Schmidt "After The Sunset" CD, a clove scented candle and some iced green tea with pomegranate and honey to set that "I can say no more" mood! Beekeepers ARE better lovers, are we not :-*?
Nice post and photos, Cindi!

Well, I know at least one other person who felt even the slightest breeze even the fluttering of a moth on the other side of the yard... John Travolta. Of course, he had an invasive brain tumor that ultimately killed him, but at the time was taking over his brain and awakening parts of it that are rarely used... (Phenomenon) :-D
UtahBeekeeper, us beekeepers are all very special people, in many, many ways.
SgtMaj. I didn't realize John Travolta was gone, oh dear...... I have always had throughout my entire life, extremely over-sensitive senses, the things that my hearing picks up sometimes scares me...... :-X :-X :) :) :)
JP, oh, I love Billy Joel, and that is indeed one of my favourite songs, beautiful, beautiful....
My Night-Scented Stocks on my bedroom patio have gone past their prime now, and I took them out, the cold weather we had awhile ago sent them to stock heaven. I transplanted some more plants from my gardens into these planters, but the scent is not as strong as the original plants :( :( :(. Oh well, next year will come, as will the anticipation of the evening scents that I know will also come along with it 8-) :) :) :) Beautiful day, love this day, cherish our lives we live. Cindi
Cindi, well, John's not gone, just his character in that movie... but I couldn't remember the character's name.
