Title: Fall in NC
Post by: mtman1849 on October 02, 2008, 09:37:22 AM
Oh well I guess fall has finally arrived in NC last night it got down in the mid 40's here  :(  it want be to long now until we see the first frost by the end of this month for sure.  So gone are the days of planting new things for the bees to work and hoping for a good honey harvest this year.  Now is the time to start planning for next year and dreaming of all the grand things I hope to do.  I really don't like this time of year.  Very depressing  :(

Things can't be that bad given your location.  I would suggest that you head over to Lexington Barbecue for a meal and some time to think about what you have learned this season and how you will put it into action next season.  Did I mention barbecue?

Well I loooove fall in NC. Granted I'm at the coast where winter is even milder but compared to where I have spent most of my life...northeast Ohio, NC is paradise. Talk about depressing, in n.e. Ohio the safe planting date is May 31, it can easily snow in June, and we had many hard freezes in late August. Cloud cover coming down across Lake Erie keeps the sun hidden 300 days a year.

The anxiety about going into a long cold winter has been replaced by the much more pleasant anxiety of getting all the winter projects done during the blessedly short cold (let's say cool) months. Did I mention how great it is raising bees here? They can fly most days year round, no wrapping hives, very early start in spring, no problems feeding syrup, etc.

We had 4 nights of frost just after the last full moon but the girls are still going strong.

Wow peletier we are so much alike, I too grew up on Ohio, western though, and now live on the coast of NC. I love this time of year, especially after a sucky HOT, HUMID summer.

Buck up pilgrim, if it wern't for the dark, you'd never appreciate the light.

Sure bee season might be over, but i've just had a grand idea. I think I'm gonna try making maple syrup this winter. No idea how, but finding out  might be fun.
