Title: Feeding Pollen Help
Post by: LocustHoney on December 25, 2008, 08:54:29 PM
I have not had ANY luck at all feeding patties. All that it seems to attract are small hive beetles. Anyway....I want to open air feed some drt pollen. I have had several beeks do this earlier in the year and it was amazing to see the bees swarm on it and concume so much in such a small amount of time. Where would I get the podwer from that I can feed "open air"? Help!!!

You can buy various types from such places as Mannlake, which sells Bee-Pro.

I feed dry from platform feeders in the fall and spring to extend the season as many times they will fly, but nothing is available.

Just put out what they can collect in one day, or cover with a top to keep rain and moisture off of it. I use a telescoping cover propped up with a brick on one side.

Here is a picture of my bees feeding on dry supplement. This is dry supplement that I made and sold last year, but no longer offer it for sale.

You can go to www.mannlakeltd.com

Details would be there for payment etc. You can buy it in 10 pound bags (item FD-200) for a few hives, or 50 lb bags (FD-201) for more hives. I figure 2-3 pounds per hive per feeding season. (fall and spring as seasons)

Just keep the unused portion sealed tight and keep the moisture out. I placed some in a zip-lock gallon bag and it was used a year later with no problems. Keeping it in the fridge prolongs the nutritional value and freezing is best if keeping long periods. But anything up to a year is good in a garage as long as it's sealed. Wax moths will find it if not protected.
