Hey, all you beekeeping experts (self and otherwise proclaimed), do you want to test your beekeeping knowledge?

I ran across this site this afternoon.  Located at goodbeekeeping.com's website, it is a 50 question test to see how much you know about the subject.  If you take the test more than once, some of the questions will be different because the questions are randomly selected from a data base of a bunch of questions.  The first time I took it, I scored 25 of 50.  The second time, I scored 38 of 50.  I figure I'll leave well enough alone and not take it again!

Ryan, I hate it that it wouldn't work for you!  Maybe one of us will run across another test or the like and it will work for you.

Well, after seeing everyone else's scores, I don't feel so bad about mine! LOL  Lesli, you are correct.  For a score of 38, they say that we are "formidable" (formidable >adjective inspiring fear or respect through being impressively large, powerful, or capable.  From the dictionary in my "Wrod Perfect II" program) beekeepers!  Great job everybody!!

I hope everyone has enjoyed this.  If you have, let me know.  I'll be glad to share with all of you any other "interesting" things concerning honey bees that I come across!

36/50 here, but I agree with TT, some of their awnsers are up for review. I got caught on how many lbs of honey in a full frame. I said 6-7 they said 5-6. Oh well, no use sour grapeing! :lol:

No sour grapes here, either, but yes, I thought a few questions were ambiguous. But then, there are a lot of things about beekeeping that are like that. :)

Darn, it won't work for me either. I can get to the first page, but the test won't load. Probabbly has something to do with the wireless, it acts up sometimes.

35 here. But I don't agree with spme of the answers, like opening up a hive in -10 degree weather to feed sugar???

Hi there, I tried the quiz, I got 29 out of 50 , not to bad for a brand new beekeeper.  I'll try again after a few months

36-guess I have to learn more about flowers

I didn't think that was too bad.  I'm happy with 37, given the text was densigned for beekeepers in the US.

Some of the questions were tricky or irrelevant, i.e. going from celcius to farenheit, converting the months of the year around, km/h to m/ph. When trees found in america flower is kind of irrelevant in Australia.  

I, also failed the one about working the bees when the neighbours are having a party. That would depend on how far away your naighbours are wouldn't it?

Next time I shall use a calculator :).

I scored a 38. I just got started this spring and it has been a wild ride. I made a few mistakes but I have learned from them. All-in-all, this is the most fun i have had with a hobbyin years. My wife said I have too many hobbies so I will stick with just the bees.

for only doing this for less than a year i guess i did all right a working knowledge 21/50 :)

23/50 but I know nothing and a lot of it doesnt apply to us, we have no snow, racoons or some of those diseases.

There are a few incorrect answers on the questionnaire.  There are also a couple of dated questions.  An example is about the "latest report" of africanized bees found in the wing of a plane in South Carolina.  This was from 2002 which is rather dated compared to current reports of africanized bees in Florida.  There is also a question about the various sugar contents of honey which states that sucrose is not a normal component of honey.  Nectar as secreted by plants is sucrose which is then inverted by the bees to fructose and glucose.  There is always a small amount of sucrose that is not inverted.  It is typically 2% or less of the total sugar content of ripened honey.  You can feed table sugar to bees and they will invert it from sucrose and make something similar to honey.  The way you detect such adulteration is not by measuring the sucrose content, but rather by checking for the proteins made by sugar cane or sugar beets.

37, didn't think the test was put together very well, but it was fun

I took it 3 times and my best was 32.  Guess, I need to hit the books.

First try I got 31/50, which supposedly makes me an 'adequate' beekeeper.  :roll:

Some of the questions were irrelevant to beekeeping in general, such as the question re the date of the introduction of Africanized bees into the US & others. Other questions were irrelevant to the way I want to keep bees (avoid most chemicals.) And I got a lot of those wrong.

Having said that, I got a whole lot more right than I should have by pure guessing. After all there's a 25% chance of guessing right with four choices, and a 50% of guessing right with two choices.  ;)

It was fun, though, and I'll probably take it again just for the fun of it and the chance that I might learn something.   :)

i got a 26 out of 50 it said i was better than average bear which is good im a 18 yr old guy from Indiana and ive only been beekeepin for almost 2 years and havent looked at books to much just kinda learned stuff in the fields so i think i done pretty good but i think im gonna hit the books before i try again :)

That makes sense if you figure that the forager bees from the strong hive will tend to come back to the weak hive. Otherwise it makes no sense at all ...

This will definitely work if you change hive places during the day when most foragers are out forageing.  They come back to the hive location not the hive itself and in turn gives a boost to the weak colony with out any noticeale set back to the strong colony. This method works on drifting issues also.

I got a 35 out of 50, or a C-.  I'll take that sice I a so new that I don't have any bees yet.  Just shows me that all this reading is maybe paying off.  More reading is necessary, though. 

I got 34 out of 50, which isn't all that great, although it did say I was a 'formidable beekeeper'.   Need to keep reading and learning!

Remember the questions though, those who are lamenting their scores, some of the questions were honey industry stats questions.  Most beeks don't keep that stuf running around in your head.  I think it would have been more fun if it was strickly beekeeping and bee biology.  Byut I can be funny that way.

Have you used the firefox browser from Mozzila to browse the web.It may work better.Also make sure your java apps are up to date.    Ken

36   :(  although thats supposed to be good (or o.k.) I was dissapointed in myself. I did choose the wrong answere to 1 of the questions that I knew. It was the ? about a drones mother father and grandfather. I think I read here on this forum about how a drone has a grandfather but no father. Anyway I read that somewhere and knew that was the answere but the way they listed the answeres tricked me. I missed two other ?'s that I would have gotten right if I would have went with my first instincts. I still after so many yrs. cant do that for ?'s that I dont know when taking a test. This is my first yr. beekeeping though + the yr. isnt even over yet so I guess I did o.k.

  Holy Cow, a 48 !! Guessed at two of them, ( total U.S. production and something about wax bloom ) and lucked out but other than that I'm happy. I think reading alot has more to do with a good result than experience.

Got a 32 and I don't even have bees........yet. Been doing lots of reading.

Though, as I've learned over the years - Reading = Preparation and Doing=Knowing.

I said 6-7 pounds of honey per frame.

:roll:It depends on the number of frames per honey super and or the spacing of the frames.
I have helped to check the weights of some very full 9 frames per super.
We weighed the super, extracted the honey, put the same frames back into the super, weighed the super and came up with 55 to 58 pounds!
Ten frames fully drawn out to the bottom bar should yield 3.5 to 4 pounds.
So, they need to change the questions structure.
I prefer the medium depth supers, 6 & 5/8" deep, for extracting

34/50  Better than I thought I'd do.  I'll print out the answers & use them as study material.  Then retake the test each month.  Some questions do seem relative.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes me to get them all right.  I wonder how many total questions there are.  This is a good source of info for us beginners.

I got 37 out of 50 twice and 40 out of 50 once.  it seems I tend to miss the treatment answers the most.  (which explains why I don't do it I guess).

I scored a 31/50 for a new beekeeper I think that is pretty good.  Considering I read a lot of bee books.

Tried twice.  Got a 36 both times.  Didn't miss the same questions twice.

The color has to do with what year the queen was raised.

As I figured, I have a lot to learn.

I took the test twice 2 days apart. I scored a 22/50 at first but today I scored a 28/50, an Adequate beekeeper.
Between the two scores I read a website with information and the book Fruitless Fall by Rowan Jacobson. It was very informative on getting me up to date on the current problems we're having with bees and the other struggling pollinators.

The test seems to be a good general guide on knowledge.

i'm fairly new at this but i still managed 31 out of 50. much better than i thought.

34 out of 50. Question though - Do Queens get AFB and thus become Drone Layers because that is what the answer to one of my test questions implied. Gee, I thought that AFB affected only brood, not adult bees, let alone the Queen. But hey, I am just a newbie!! ;)

38 of fifty for me.  Most wrong answers were 'treatment related' and since I don't treat I suppose it was expected.  Some of the questions didn't leave room for other accepted methods (ie) Under feeding bees, sugar syrup wasn't even mentioned, so I had to choose corn syrup as a safe feed despite disagreeing with its use.  Oh well the test proclaims I am a formidable beek so I am satisfied.  I'll likely take it again sometime.

I seemed to have an inordinate amount of historical questions.  I guess I don't find importance in knowing what date ahb were released, what year trachael mites hit, what year varroa hit, or what queen color was used in 2002.  I guess that last one had more to do with me not marking queens than history.  I also had a few where I missed the very important which is "NOT" part of the question!

Ultimately, the beekeeper using the product regulates its use. I don't use chemicals except sugar but just because it has a label doesn't mean that they will be used in accordance with the label. That would have been 38... Still looking at some of the others I got wrong.

50 /50  on the Beginners & Advanced 49/50 Not to Bad been studying and researching for two years about honey bees missed one on wind and I still disagree about that one . and I have been working with bees with bees for two month with my mentor and I have yet to get my own bees yet . I am still learning .It was fun though I did enjoy it never tested myself on what i have been learning as there is so much that contradicts each state and country .

Some of those answers are utterly incorrect...

Well on the swarming question, I would pick "none of the above" if it were offered...  Adding supers is ineffective during prime swarm season and the rest are ineffective at any time.
