Title: Concerns About Swarm Prevention, Time of Year Etc.
Post by: DayValleyDahlias on January 10, 2009, 05:15:27 PM
Dear Friends,

Thank you for helping me with this confusion.

Last year, my one and only hive swarmed on March 3rd.

This year I have 3 colonies, and I do not want them to swarm.  Our temps are unusually warm, and I see a ton of bees flying in and out today.

I am worried about possible overcrowding causing swarm conditions, but I am also concerned that it is too early to start screwing around with adding empty frames, as it is still Winter, and even though we are warm, next week or month could bring cold with it...

Suggestions, and ideas greatly appreciated...The bees look great!

P.S. Just sat next to the hive, LOT'S of bees, lot's of activity.  The weaker hive has eaten almost all of the fondant I made last week.  I think the eucalyptus are beginning to bloom.

Thanks Michael,

I actually read your site today re: swarm prevention.  My concern is the weather.  Is it ok to open the brood box at this time?

I don't know how far north Aptos is, but I would not be opening a brood box until April, probably here and then only on a warm day.  There is no need to open the brood box until swarm season is in full swing.  A lot of drones will be around before that and you can see them flying.

Thanks again Michael,

I really appreciate your advice.  I had dreams last night of bees swarming...hhhhhmmm.

I will be patient, and also set up swarm traps just in case!
