Title: Inner Cover Question ?
Post by: bullybrink on March 13, 2009, 05:16:35 PM
I received my second hive today that I had ordered and found that the inner cover I ordered doesn't have an air vent on the end just the escape hole in the middle. Since I am new to beek I didn't even know that there were two different types. Is one better than the other and if so why? I am just wondering for future reference in case I decide to add more colonies in the future.

The air vent on the end doubles as a small top entrance. Some inner covers have them, some don't. In my opinion with a hole that small it doesn't matter the much. You can accomplish more by proping up the top cover. You could also put a 3/8 notch in the one you got with a couple passes on a table saw or with a speed bit on your drill.

I have some of both styles. I have no real preference for either one. I have made several inner covers and I do not make the notch. The only ones I have with the notch are some that were bought.

Either notch or prop the cover.  You have to get ventilation through the hive to get rid of the moisture from curing nectar.

Ok, here the next new guy question. What is the escape hole for? Is it just for ventalation or do they need to escape?

Mainly ventilation but I have seen the bees use it.

If the bees use it, then you would have to have a holle in the cover, or prop the cover of the cover up, correct?

No on a telescoping cover they should be able to move in and out fine.

the hole in the middle can be used for jar/bucket feeders.  it's also access for the bees if you put dry sugar on the inner cover over the winter.  it's air space.  they are a little big to leave open because it's to big a hole for bees to protect from robbers.  if you want a permanent upper entrance, put a small notch in the end.  if not, don't worry about the hole.

I prefer the ones with no notch. I do not want a top entrance. In the heat of the summer, I provide upper entrances in the supers. The rest of the year, the bees benefit from the trapped heat.

Of course for those who feed sugar syrup all fall and winter, a top entrance will probably help against all the damage one is inflicting upon the bees.  ;)

gota go with bjorn on that one......  upper entrances during nectar flow,  trap the warmth when its chilly
