Title: Checked the hives today.
Post by: Shawn on March 15, 2009, 08:46:33 PM
So I opened the hive today, 2 deeps, and saw the top body full of bees. I pulled out some frames and saw the bottom quarter of the frame had brood (eggs mostly) and the rest had honey and pollen. It looked kind of strange because I was looking for that "oval" pattern that the brood is in at the center of the frame. I dug into the bottom hive body and saw this

I think maybe the queen is just getting going good and is now expanding into the top deep. I tried to find the queen in both hives I have but missed out on both. Not worried because there were lots of eggs, larvae of all sizes, and capped cells.

Ok checked again and snaps some photos. It seems the comb they are building is larger than I expected. They have backed off of building on the plastic frames and are building down from the inner cover. How do you stop them from doing that? Here are some photos of the bees and frames with a shot of the queen!

Ok I got the slatted boards in and got them painted to match the hives. I decided to check them out and took a couple of photos. When I opened both hives up I noticed a smell I never have before. It was a mix of dirty feet or wet dog, not sure which. I know we dont have any goldenrod around here so I dont know whats making the smell. Should it be something to worry about? I did notice a lot more drone cells in both hives. I noticed a lot of different colored pollen, lots of pollen. Anyway here are a couple more photos. One from each hive.
