Title: Should leave feeders on when using patties?
Post by: johnwm73 on April 11, 2009, 01:40:18 AM
I had a bad year for my first year and both my hives didn't make it. But I am using the drawn comb for the 2 packages I just installed today. Gave them both some sugar syrup after I installed them. When I check in 3 days for the release of the queen I am going to put on some Mega Bee patties and take off the feeders. Should I leave the feeders on after I put on the patties or take the feeders off?

Now I am a new beekeeper myself, so others may correct me if I am wrong.

However, my understanding is that the megabee is basically a pollen substitute, especially when used in a patty and not liquid. Even though it has carbs, the bees will not be able to store it like nectar and so will still need a source of nectar substitute which what syrup is.

I would keep the feeders.

Yep, I'd keep the feeders on.
