I have three hives, C1, C2 (both foundationless) and TBH. Packages were installed monday night.
Weather is overcast and about 50 degrees.
C2 was inspected first, they have a hive top feeder and have put a good dent in the 1 1/4 gallons I put in it.
Activity at the entrance has been spotty and today it was slow compared to C1. There appeared to be a good number of bees in the hive and they had started drawing out comb on three frames, the one with the most was maybe the size of a hand. I did not see the queen but the bees were pretty thick on the frames.
C1 was next, activity around the entrance was pretty good. The hive top feeder was noticably lighter than the first hive and there was maybe double the bees in it. This hive is doing really well, two frames had about the same amount of comb as the first and it had a 3rd frame almost 1/3 drawn out.
TBH was last, of all three this one has the least comb drawn out, I am using a can feeder and I would say they have not touched it, the small amount gone may have just leaked out. I am going to look at a different feeder for these guys.
All three hives are following the guides I put in so if they keep it up then I should not have any problems with comb across the frames.
I never did find a queen but the bees were not agressive at all, despite it being a cool cloudy day with showers on and off.
It is interesting how differently packages are. I just hived three a couple of weeks ago. They all three act completely differently. I cannot guage how they each draw comb, because I have them all on fully drawn comb. They are all taking the syrup like there is n o tomorrow.
The TBH taking no syrup concerns me a little, however at this point I either have two normal hives and one monster :) or one normal hive and two weak :(
I started with one hive, now have two, but I need a better place to put the bees if I want to expand any more than that. I keep looking, but so far properties around here have been priced outrageously.
If the syrup is too cold in the topbar, they may be reluctant to take it.How are your nighttime temps?
