I will be picking up 2 packages on the 21st of this month and am still getting ready for them. I bought 2 different types of foundation from Dadant this last week. This morning, just for the heck of it, I measured the cell size. Across the flats both foundations cells measure 4.9mm. Neither of these foundations was advertised as small cell. They are the 35310 crimp wire and 37200 plasticell foundations. Some of their foundation are advertised as small cell and contain a caveat that it should be used by experienced Bee Keepers only. Will the packages that I am getting be able to work with this size or am I getting in trouble all ready?
Please Deconfuse me.
Chuck
I don't think you need to worry, the bees are smart enough to figure it out.
Good luck.
Beekeeping is only a expensive hobby.

Since 4.9mm foundation goes for about twice as much, it seems doubtful that they send you 4.9mm foundation. Did you measure across ten cells and get 4.9cm? Still, that's exactly what I would do. I'd put a package on that or foundationless.
Michael,
Yes, it is 4.9. I measured across ten cells and got 4.9 cm. In my other life I was a Model Maker/Machinist and am way too hung up on precision. The bees are going to teach me a thing or two about not being all wrapped up in perfection and repeatability, which were hallmarks of life before retirement. I went and read your stuff about reverting to small cell and decided that I am just into the first step of regression if I pick up packaged bees that are not use to their normal size. :) I think that Dadant has done me a favor.
Thanks for your input and your extraordinarily helpful web site. You have become a virtual mentor for me.

If it's 4.9mm then you got a bargain if you bought it for standard price. Yes, they did you a huge favor. :)
