Title: Fast learning!
Post by: lmehaffey on April 24, 2009, 08:44:09 AM
Here's the tale: I got my first-ever bees 3 days ago (2 nucs) and got them hived with no problems other than having the wrong sized frames for the brood box. I called up a friend, an 88-year old beekeeper, and asked if I could beg/borrow/buy some 9 1/4 frames from him. His reply to this brand-new beeker? "I'll give you the frames if you'll come get this swarm out of my big cedar". Seems he had cut one of his fingers off on a table-saw - making a new set of supers, of course - and couldn't climb the ladder, much less cut the branch and lower the swarm into the box.

With the confidence of an ignorant man, I immediately volunteered my service! Long story made short? I harvested that swarm, hived them (in what he called a "gum box"), and now have another box of bees in my yard. Dang!! Is this stuff fun or what?   :bee:

That's too bad. Was he able to get it reattached?

No...but he doesn't seem too upset about it. Told me that he still had enough digits left to get by on. I imagine that as soon as the bandages come off, he'll be OK. My brother, a cabinet-make, is missing the tips of a couple of his fingers -- says it's just the cost of business!

 Congrats on your bees.
It can be most inconveniant missing part of your thumb also. Can't hang onto anything. I PO'ed several frames of bees til I made me a frame grabber.
