Title: Sugar Quality?
Post by: MustbeeNuts on April 27, 2009, 03:28:49 PM
Does anyone think there is a quality issue with sugar from one manufacturer to another, in a previous post I asked about my sugar going to candy , a 1/4 in thick in the jars. I got that sugar from a bargain store, cheeeep!! well when I cooked it up it had a lot of white stuff on the top, could that have been corn starch? I don't know if that is the case with granulated sugar, but do know they do it with powdered. I made another batch just like the first and let it cool and sit and have no candy problem. Anyone care to comment on the sugar quality, does it make sense that its the cheap sugar. The new sugar was a bit more costly.  .45 per lb, as too .55 per lb. Just curious.

Yes Michael Bush recommends pure cane granulated sugar. See his quote below.

"What kind of sugar? It matters not at all if it's beet sugar or cane sugar.

It matters a lot if it's granulated white sugar or anything else. Powdered sugar, brown sugar, molasses and any other unrefined sugar is not good for bees. They can't handle the solids. "

It used to be you could tell the source of the sugar by the brand name:  U & I wstood for Utah and Idaho and was from sugar beets, C & H stood for California and Hawaii and was from sugar cane.  Nowadays who knows unless they denote sugar beets or sugar cane on the package.
