Title: Sugar water life??
Post by: combover on May 01, 2009, 06:18:17 PM
Feeding 2 hives.  So far I have added 2 and 1/2 gallons to each since installing the packages on 4-19.

I made a 4 gallon batch the other night and had 2 gallons left after feeding.  How long can that be stored and where should one store it??

Sugar water doesn't store well unless it is sterilized and sealed up. I feed hummingbirds, and the sugar water usually needs to be changed out about every 3 days or so.
One option (from what I understand) is to add some Honey B Healthy to it. According to what I've read, the essential oils in the HBH will help preserve the sugar water. Another option is to refrigerate it- it may be a possibility to freeze it, but I've never tried that. A third option is to feed the hummingbirds after diluting it to 1 part sugar: 4 parts water.
