Title: First swarm! Good news so far...
Post by: watercarving on May 05, 2009, 07:49:14 PM
Great swarm story. Have some pics and video. Will fill in the details later.

Question, supposed to storm tomorrow. Should I screen them in so they can't leave the new hive or just let them work it out? I put in one frame of wax with nectar and a feeder.

Thanks,

I would not screen them in. You could put a queen excluder between your bottom board and the brood chamber. This will allow the workers to come and go but confine the queen. I have hived several dozen swarms this year, only a couple left and I think they drifted to other hives.

Good luck with your new swarm,

Steve

I don't have a queen includer. Hopefully the rain will hold them in.

The bees are orientating to their new hive and taking feed. Looks like they'll stay.

It's cool that they are 10' from their old hive but have totally forgotten about it. God's creatures are truly amazing.

I will agree with you there! Makes you feel small doesn't it?
