Title: Is this normal?
Post by: Schoon on May 21, 2009, 08:27:14 PM

Does this look normal for a rainy day. Its about 5:00PM today and I walk out to look at my hive and this is the way they were. I am still feeding them. This is a new hive from a nuc. They have about 1 1/2 empty frames on each side. I didn't know if I should add a super now or not? Thanks  I had a picture but this writing came up and said I could not post a picture or link. If I did I would be banned. There are a lot of bees at the entrance.

Not sure about the bees at the entrance, even if I could see the picture because I am a new beek. However, the general rule is when 70% of the hive body is full, add another. For most, that is 7 out of 10 frames being filled. In your case, I would be adding another super in a hurry.

Make sure you understand that's 70% of the frames full of bees, not just drawn comb.
