I finally got to use my Ulster observation hive today with the whole 2nd grade class at my daughter's school.
I had put together a nuc with a new queen a couple of weeks ago. Had the queen marked and everything went great. I never saw so many arms stretched wanting to ask questions. The queen put on a show as well. I wasn't sure if she had started laying yet, but she laid the whole 45 minutes of the presentation. Other than an attendent feeding her and others grooming her, she had her tail in a cell most of the time. I couldn't understand why no one new what a smoker was, not even the teachers. Just about all the kids got the see the queen laying eggs. 45 minutes went by way too fast.

Sounds like a great time. Did you get a feeling some of them might take it up one day?
I couldn't tell. Most of them were holding their head back when they entered the room like they were too close to a fire. They did warm right up to them after just a few minutes though.

Wow that sounds very exciting for the kids and I am always amazed at how much kids are drawn to bees. They just love to watch them. I have always enjoyed this during the Sacramento Fair.
...probably the ones who almost follow you out the door with the bees.
Here are a few pics. Again, I had a ball!

What wonderful photos of you doing this presentation. I bet it was a fun time for you. I would like to do something like that one day.
