Title: industrial strength veil
Post by: irekkin on May 27, 2009, 12:37:29 AM
i know a lot of you tough macho beeks work your bees in your underwear but i'm one of those sissy dudes that has to have a veil. mine was an el cheapo and has become more duct tape then veil. looked around at dadant, brushy mountain, etc. and they all have about the same thing. what i'm looking for is something tough, light and has a little more coverage down the back of my neck. the cover of this months american bee journal ( may ) has a fellow working bees with a helmet veil combo that looks like it would do a good job. any suggestions? tia.

No it was not, but I thought he was going for el cheapo, until I just reread his post.

I used the helmet and folding square veil for many years, the helmet finally gave it up the other day. The veil had a zipper to go onto my coveralls, but if I did not wear them I would just simply put the helmet and veil on and let it drape down on my shoulders.

I liked the looks of the one JP was wearing and ordered one from dadant, the jacket and veil combo.

This is the bee suit I got when I started. The veil is a firm screen that holds it shape. I think that is what you are asking for.

My "industrial strength" veil has a tear along one of the seams. One reason I ended up with a sting on my right eyebrow the other day. So far one of the el-cheapo "Mosquito netted Boonie hats" (8$ at Harbor Freight) has been working for me. It covers a lot more in the back and drawstrings closed at the neck. I keep intending to thread some fine spring steel wire through the netting to help hold it put away from my skin, but it really seems ro do much better than one would think at first.

I didn't realize that we are supposed to dress up for this activity.  I thought that B-suit was short for Birthday Suit...This might explain why the neighbors want me to give-up my bees.   Hmmmm....I guess I won't be getting sunburned this summer.

Does anybody know where I can get a tie-dyed suit, I'm gonna feel guilty wearing white.

Oh well. The wife might like it til the swelling goes down...which could take a couple of DAYS.  :devilbanana:

Hmm...I found one that you may be interested in.  No stings, guaranteed!

Doesn't look good for the honey production, though.
