Title: Lucky Acquisitions
Post by: reinbeau on June 04, 2009, 10:11:17 AM
A friend of ours is downsizing and when he has bees again he's going to go to top bar hives.  He had lots of equipment for sale.  We picked up a nice Dadant 12 frame radial extractor.  We had to clean it up quite a bit:

It's a nice extractor, better than the one we already have, it'll stay up in Maine, so now we've got an extractor for both homes!  It came with an awesome stand that moves around on wheels and has removable handles; you can see on the outside picture the holdl-down system, it works very well!  Pretty good for $200, huh?  :-D

He also was selling some eight-frame medium supers, so we grabbed 15 of them, three telescoping covers, two bottom boards and two or three ten-frame miscellaneous pieces, all for $45.  Normally we wouldn't buy second hand equipment, but we've knows him for awhile and we know his bees were disease free.  From now on all our eight frame equipment will be grey, and the ten frame stuff will be our rhubarb leaf green.  But I don't see us buying much more equipment for the foreseeable future - there's no place to put more!!

Well now Ann, that's gotta have you and the chopper feeling pretty randy, great pick up!

Nothing wrong with grey, got about 15 gallons of oops from H.D. (http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/9395/cimg4532.th.jpg) (http://img517.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cimg4532.jpg)

Ann,. beauty.  So nice when you get a great deal like that, and that is the deal of the century.  When I saw the pictures, I thought to myself, now that must be Ann's work, look at the rhubarb green and the grey, smiling.  I knew you had painted them even before you spoke of them in the post.  I CLEARLY recall you having all your supers in your living room while you were painting them (or was it your bedroom, smiling) and getting a real kick out of this.  Anyhoo, good for you, when you find a deal like that, it is not wise to pass it up, hee, hee.  BEautiful days, to love, live and share, best of health wishes, Cindi

It was the living room, Cindi, finally the garage is clear enough (had to sell an old truck) that we can do that work out there - but I have to correct one thing, Hubby is the painter, he makes sure everything looks good before it goes out into the bee yard!

I put five coats of latex on everything before it gets put out in one of our yards. You never know when you'll get arond to repainting it. I've used two coats of light gray on alot of our stuff as a primer so I had some hanging around. I didn't want the eight frame equipment the same color as the ten frame hence the color change.

You must have a Michigan connection with all the Michigan license plates on the wall.  :-D

Both Ann and I have Michigan connections. We've got almost 300 license plates hanging on the wall from all over Canada and the US. I've been collecting them for almost 20 years. Good catch !!!

I'll email him and ask him but I think he's pretty much sold everything off. What are you looking for ? I'll keep me eyes open for you because we frequently hear of stuff for sale. Are you going to Deerfield, MA. for the MassBee meeting on the 20th of this month ? Should be informative and fun.

Congrats!  That sounds like a great find!  Why did you paint the insides of the supers, btw?  I'm guessing you were trying to seal off any contamination that there might be on the insides of the boxes?
