I have a hive that has finally filled the first hive body. My question is with a dearth on would it be wise to add the second body or would this be a hindrance to them? Being new to the hobby I don't know if another nectar flow is coming here in South Carolina it took them 3 months to fill the first with some feeding.
I would not be adding boxes in a dearth unless you won't have a chance to keep an eye on things. It will be a hindrance. But you do need to pay attention as a flow can change things quickly.
Where in sc. Basically our flow is over. We sometimes get a little flow in the fall. Sourwood hit and miss in mountains in June-July time frame.
If you add a super they will probably just chew the foundation. I do have a yard however that is close to town and they sometimes pick up a little flow here and there, I suppose from yard plantings. I don't believe enough however to draw comb.
As mb said if you add it watch it close an --- if you don't add, watch for signs of a late flow which we rarely have in my area.
