Title: Goldenrod early???
Post by: Joshb12885 on July 20, 2009, 12:08:52 AM
I am just posting this to see if anyone else in the country is noticing an earlier than usual goldenrod bloom. It seems that this year many of the flowering plants such as sumac and elderberry just to name a couple are a little delayed in my area (central/southern ohio) but I was driving by a field today and noticed goldenrood starting to bloom. Perhaps this is a differnt species than the one that produces such major flows in september and October, but it is definately Solidago (goldenrod).

Do you think this may produce undesirable honey if I harvest in late august?

Josh

There's lot's of goldenrod around here but it's not yet blooming.  Queen Anne's Lace is open now, 2 or 3 weeks earlier than last year.

I haven't noticed any goldenrod yet.  Shumac has been out for a couple weeks and clover seems to be still going strong even though it it looked to me that it was drying up a week ago.

Not at all.  This is a huge seller in my area.  Then again...I come from an area where people eat dandelions, put chicken on their waffles, and eat scrapple.   :-D

I noticed it about a week ago, which is early here too.   Seems to be quite patchy though,  I'll see an area with it in bloom and then it will be another few miles before I see it in bloom again.   Usually the loosestrife blooming overwhelms the goldenrod, but I haven't seen any loosestrife blooming yet.

On the drive home tonight, I made it a point to check for goldenrod.  Lots of unbloomed (is this even a word ) goldenrod out in the fields.  I only saw a few plants actually in early bloom though.

Quotedont know if this is a good sign or not.

Let's hope it's a good sign.

Our fire hall used to have a ham and dandelion dinner.  Made good money.  You can have the dandelion.  I grew up in Johnstown where things were a little bit...you know....normal.  (http://www.websmileys.com/sm/crazy/686.gif)

No blooms here yet, usually the end of august or september. I wish they would bloom early!

I have not seen any goldenrod blooming in my haunts of northern Indiana.  I usually expect goldenrod to begin in the first week of August.  To me goldenrod is kind of the harbinger of the end of summer being just around the corner.

Purple loosestrife is well into its bloom.  The main thistle bloom is just coming on.  Milkweed is just about over.  Button bush is well past prime.  Butterflyweed is on strong.
