Title: Carni Question
Post by: MustbeeNuts on July 25, 2009, 01:24:59 PM
I have a hive of Carni's, they are doing fine, however there brood box is one med. I have 4 others and they are on there third med of hive body, meaning brood and such in the three meds. Thats fine., however this one hive has like I said only one, well it was full I gave it a second, that second is now 9 frames honey, lovely med of honey but hey,, my question is , is that normal for Carni's, I mean my others are building nicely brood and I'm just about to put a super on for honey on the other ones, next week probably. but what about the one that doesn't seem to be expanding, yes there is a queen, I am somewhat confused by this hive, what is a good idea, put a new super under the honey one, and swap out a few frames of brood and add some new frames below????? Any advice from the forum? Thanks

If you have 2 mediums full of bees it's time to add another super.  Pull the top one full of honey and put the new super in between.  the bees will then draw out the new box sandwiched between the other 2 as a second brood chamber.  Your problem was that the bees backfilled what would have been the 2nd brood chamber due to a honey flow so the queen didn't have enough room to build up the population properly.  Sandwiching the new super will cure the problem and put you in position to over winter with 3 full medium boxes.
