In the south,should you or how offten should you inspect your hives in the winter.

define "winter"   :-D

It hardly gets below freezing where I live and our winter is only a couple of months - Dec, Jan - maybe mid-Feb.

What part of Texas do you live in? 

You don't want to open up the hives if it is too cold and let out all the heat, but you want to check to make sure they have enough honey stores if the weather is good.

I only peeked at mine a couple of times last winter but it was my first year so I am still a noob.

I'm sixty miles north of you In New Waverly. Yes,don't let their heat out.

Rule of thumb I use is don't take the top off a hive on any day that you wouldn't want the roof taken off your house. this works for me in winter spring summer and fall

I have also heard it best to wait until the temperature is above 50 degrees, which is not hard to do with our winters down here.
