Title: Swarm traps for nucs
Post by: Chick on August 09, 2009, 05:51:08 PM
For those of you that use Nucs for swarm traps, do you put foundation in them? How many? Do you use wax, plastic, or wax coated plastic foundation? I am scared of wax moths getting into the foundation, without bees there. How high do you place the nucs?

Wax moths won't bother foundation.  They only go after wax that has had brood raised in it.

I put foundationless frames in them and maybe one old dark partly moth eaten comb.

How do you use them round swarm catchers with the hole in the end ? Do you put anything in them and where and how do you put them up ?

On the flange of the base, there are holes, to pass a wire through it. You simply tie a piece of wire through one hole, run it around the tree truck, and tie it off to the other hole. There are 4 holes on the round body that you put screws through, or push roofing tacks through them, to hold the body to the base. Yes, you put an attractant in the trap body.
