I have a hive whose population has exploded - its whole front is covered w/ bees every night - and I know it isn't the weather because it is a cool night. I know it is a waste - I would like to add another super but don't any drawn comb - so not sure w/ it being late season (I'm in Michigan) if it'll do any good. Another thing I thought is should I split this hive - or is it also too late? any suggestions... it's bugging me seeing this, and I know it is probably poor management on my part.
what it looks like inside is more important. also, you population should begin to reduce. look at your brood area over the next 2-3 weeks. i think you'll find your queen backing off laying.
have you been feeding? do they have room, or have they stuffed the hive with honey?
when you get a chance, go to your profile and post your location. that way you don't have to remind us where you are with every post :-)

If the hive is crowded and has no growing room even in Michigan,I would add a supper,if not for anything else but to give them room. If all frames are covered with bees and all frames are full of honey ,pollen and brood, add a supper.
It is to late to split.
How big is your hive? 1or2 boxes high? 10 or 8 frames? deep or med ? and post your location in your profile at will help a lot.
BEE HAPPY Jim 134 :)
I'm in Michigan, yes it's too late to do a split in my opinion. then again try it. I have three splits that are working right along. but am considering combining them shortly to help with numbers for winter(there six weeks). if you can get them to fill two deeps or three meds. by first frost. they could make it. but you would really heavily have to feed them. And it would be iffy. but I have seen nucs wintered.
