Title: Cleaning an extractor
Post by: meroopt on October 18, 2009, 09:08:07 PM
Hi all,

I am about to extract as my hives are full and there is a massive honey flow on.  The problem is though that I share and extractor with my next door neighbour and I suspect he may have some disease problems.  I know that one of his hives had foul brood and needed to be destroyed.

I was wondering if anyone out there could give me some hints on how to clean an extractor before use.

Looking forward to some responses.

Use a hot torch all over it to burn AFB and EFB. You have to put new grease in after (food grade).

Clean it as you would normally. Just don't let your bees clean it out. AFB and EFB doesn't affect humans, so won't hurt your honey.

They do have a different odor to the honey! How close is this other bee keeper you share the extractor with? I would keep a close look at your hives for any sign.
